Professor Ayesha Ahmed Motala MB ChB (Natal); MRCP (UK); MD (Natal); FRCP (UK); FCP (College of Medicine of SA) trained in Medicine at UKZN, Internal Medicine at the Royal College of Physicians in the UK, and received her MD (PhD equivalent) in Diabetes from UKZN. She has served as Professor and Deputy Head of the Department of Medicine at the University of Natal, Professor and Chairperson (sabbatical) in the Department of Internal Medicine at Arabian Gulf University in Bahrain and, since 2004, has been Professor and Head of the Department of Diabetes and Endocrinology at the Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine at UKZN.
Prof Motala is a member of several national and international societies, and served as Vice Chairperson and Chairperson of the Society for Endocrinology, Metabolism and Diabetes of Southern Africa. She is currently involved with the International Diabetes Epidemiology Group, the World Diabetes Congress on the International Diabetes Federation, the World Health Organisation, and is a member of the Executive Committee for the International Diabetes Foundation BRIDGES Committee for Translational Research. She is a reviewer (referee) for a number of peer reviewed journals, including Diabetes Care and Diabetic Medicine, and is the Associate Editor of Diabetes for the Journal of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Diabetes of South Africa. An accomplished speaker, Prof Motala has presented more than 50 papers at international congresses and societies and over 80 at local meetings.
